Matt Ellis

I'm a fiction writer, freelance literary critic, and photographer. My ability to tackle diverse topics and genres come from an equally diverse life: accomplished classical musician, computer and network forensics investigator, US Army combat veteran with two tours in Iraq, counterintelligence special agent, HUMINT officer, and diplomat (defense attaché in Bolivia and security attaché in Guatemala). In 2021, I left my role as a senior defense intelligence and security expert to focus on my passion for writing full-time. 

I'm drawn to stories that focus on the evolution and impact of historical, contemporary, and emerging international geopolitical issues on society. Most recently, I've worked as a freelance contributor for Publishers Weekly and Kirkus, and served as the interviews editor for The Coachella Review. My writing has also been featured or is forthcoming in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Thought Catalog, Sein Werden and Pseudopod. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts from the University of California at Riverside, Palm Desert and was selected as a 2021-2022 National Book Critics Circle Emerging Critic Fellow.
